fashion event: SALON/ - the winter edition (15th-30th of January 2011)

Salon/ shows us the cultural side of fashion and art by presenting a cross-over experience through the city of Amsterdam. On several inspiring, unique locations Salon/ wants to instigate a discussion and dialogue between art+design+fashion, because these worlds are becoming one. But what is and what is not fashion, art or good design? 

Lady Gaga wears our Dutch Couture Du Taminiau

That's what I like about Lady Gaga (yes, another piece on this blog about this extraordinary pop-cult lady of our times), she (or her Gaga-Team) have balls when it comes to fashion. Gaga was in Paris, having lunch, and what do you wear when your name is lady Gaga and you go out for lunch in the city of fashion: haute couture, what else. But not a French Couture House decorated her, but the Dutch couturier Jan Taminiau. She wears it well in combination with a contemporary pearl necklace and interview-with-the-vampier-kind of sunglasses, on the tip of her nose.
Although everyone in Europe have cold feet and is desperate in search for everything north pole-worthy, Gaga leaves the Parisian restaurant with no coat, no scarf... she shows some skin instead.

Ja! Eindelijk ging ik naar het concert van Lady Gaga toe! Vriendin H. is helemaal dol van lady gaga, wat natuurlijk de nieuwsgierigheid bij mij opwekte met haar mee te gaan.
Van kinds af aan ben ik groot bewonderaar van Madonna (ik ben een 1981'er), waar ik ook een concert van heb kunnen zien, een ongelofelijke ervaring. Wat zou Gaga a.k.a. Madonna 2.0 ervan brouwen?

What's the buzz met gaga? Ik ken de liedjes en de clips, bewonder hoe zij mode-kunst en haute couture naar het grote publiek brengt. Gaga is bezeten van extravagantie en durft te kiezen voor de meest onmogelijke en niet voor de hand liggende creaties. Gaga staat voor controverse.
Het gaat meer om fashion-art-performance, een fashion statement te maken, dan om er mooi uit te willen zien en in de mode te zijn. Gaga adoreert de kunst van de modevormgeving en speelt haar eigen rol in de fantasiewereld van modeontwerpers, gekleed als SM-achtig sprookjesfee.

Het beleven van een live concert doet iets met je. Telkens denk je: de artiest staat daar gewoon echt! Vlees en bloed, the real thing. Sterren die je alleen ziet via de kaders van de media en dus een ver-van-je-Hollandse-bed-show zijn, bevinden zich nu in dezelfde ruimte als ik, bijna surrealistisch is deze ervaring.
Het concert duurde ongeveer anderhalf uur en was een groot spektakel. Het podium transformeerde als ware het een theater dat steeds van decor wisselde bij veranderende scènes. Gaga voert een toneelstuk op, een pop-musical, van een meisje dat op zoek gaat naar het MonsterBall: het sprookje van een moderne assepoester wordt verteld, inclusief feeën, verleiding, mysterieuze karakters aan haar zijde, dwalend door donkere wouden met monsters en natuurlijk een happy end.
Gaga heeft duidelijk een missie, namelijk: de wereld laten voelen dat je jezelf moet zijn en niet met de massa mee hoeft te doen. 'Omarm het monster in jezelf... en houdt haar eigen I Have A Dream-speech.  Ze vertelt de zaal dat ze gepest is door snobische, populaire meiden op haar school, omdat ze zich niet aanpaste aan de norm. Uiteindelijk heeft haar eigenwijze zelf ervoor gezorgd dat nu die pestende populaire meiden geld betalen om haar te kunnen zien optreden.

We are all freaks, we are little monsters.

The Madonna-Era lijkt voorbij, de grote dame wordt op haar eigen terrein verslagen door nieuw entertain-talent....ondanks dat Gaga qua dans en energie nog erg veel van good-old Madonna kan leren.

Ik heb mijn oude camera mee genomen en heb niet eens hele slechte foto's kunnen maken vanaf het veld. Ik weet niet of het wel of niet mag en het nu illegaal is dat ik ze online zet, maar tja, ik ben een little monster.

Upload Cinema: Hacking Fashion - movie made from youtube videos

Once a month Upload Cinema is taking web-videos to the big screen. This month, the webworld of Fashion is represented. 
Tonight Upload Cinema show their compilation-movie 'HACKING FASHION', a result of all kinds of fashion videos the audience send in or were found on the Web. Because these days, everybody can step into the fashion world via the use of Internet: people show their daily outfits, give comments on fashion shows, make fun of fashion, stilleto-runs, imitations of fashion victims, give styling tips to viewers, present haute couture to self-made garments...the possibilities are endless. 
This movie shows how 'normal' people absorb fashion their own way and hack the out-of-reach-fashion bubble.
The movie will be online after premier, on the site of Upload Cinema, see ARCHIVE. I will also link the video of Upload Cinema when it is online. Should be fashiontainment, I say!

expo 'I am a believer': kunst in de kerk

Kunstenaars beoefenen eigenlijk een vorm van geloofsovertuiging. Zij zijn scheppers. Kunst is als een geloof: als je er voor open staat, dan zie je het en begrijp je het, beïnvloed het je kijk op de wereld wellicht. Kunst kan verlichtend werken. Met dit idee in het achterhoofd heeft stichting Creatief Initiatief de collectieve kunstexpositie "I am a Believer" geschept op deze aarde. In de Chassekerk in Amsterdam Oost installeren 10 jonge kunstenaars hun werk, speciaal vervaardigd voor deze tentoonstelling. Uit het uiteenlopende werk blijkt dat religie, (on)geloof en de adoratie van het ongrijpbare inspirerende thema's zijn voor de kunsten.
